STEPPING STONES TO A BETTER YOU - GET MOTIVATED

Updated: Apr 11

STEP 1 - GET MOTIVATED

What you believe will determine your life.

Our beliefs are an incredibly powerful tool which can work for us or work against us. As human beings we cannot raise ourselves above the level that we believe we can

For years I suffered through the ups and downs of depression, feeling unworthy of many of the joys that life had to offer. I thought this was just a normal part of life, because everyone has ups and downs, right? I struggled and I searched for answers to the question question of "Why?".

  • Why did I feel bad so often?

  • Why did I continue making the same mistakes over and over again?

  • Why was I struggling with aspects of my life - relationships, money etc?

I sought out psychologists and counsellors to help me understand and while they helped me to understand the "Why" better, something was still not right and I realised that maybe just understanding "Why" wasn't enough. Just understanding why gave me insight, but it didn't lead to changes in my behaviour or changes in my circumstances.

Over the years I had thrown myself into things like work and exercise, sometimes excessively obsessing over specific things in my life that were going well so that I could forget about the things in my life that weren't going so well…..then one day I literally hit rock bottom and decided that I wasn’t going to put up with it anymore. On this dark day I decided that I wasn't going to put up with the old me anymore. I wasn't going to put up with not having control over how I felt or how I acted, and that I was going to take control of my life.

I was absolutely positive that I was going to change my life and live the life that I was meant to live. I have come to realise that the reason I felt like I was not in control of my life is that consciously I wanted one thing, but subconsciously I was running programs which did

I was absolute positive that I was going to change my life and live the life that I was meant to live. I have come to realise that the reason I felt like I was not in control of my life is that consciously I wanted one thing, but subconsciously I was running programs which did

I was running a bunch of subconscious programs which were determining my actions and my results. This was leaving me in a place that I knew was not right for me and as a result, I felt the negative feelings of depression and anxiety and sadness.

While our conscious minds are extremely powerful, the subconscious is a million times more powerful and any time we are not focusing on a specific item consciously, the subconscious takes over. I was on auto-pilot and the learned behaviours of the subconscious were leading me to a place that I didn't want to be consciously. And this disparity between where I was and where I wanted to be caused negative emotions and ultimately lead me to a depressed state of mind. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, but everytime I took my eye off the ball, my subconscious would take me to where it was comfortable which did not serve me.

I would like to share in brief the journey that I have been on and some insights that have really helped me to transform my life and overcome the negative habits that have been holding me back and set me on the path to living a life of purpose, love and happiness. There were a number of events in my life that lead me to my low point and perhaps some of those will come to light, however, what I really want to share is the tools that I have used to find myself and how they may be able to help you transform your life. Some of these will provide value for you and some may not, so please take what you need and leave what doesn't serve you.

I believe that learning is like a spiral built on perception, we can pass by information which doesn't suit us at the time, only to find the same information later down the track and get amazing value out of it. This is because as we take on new information, we develop new reference points which allow us to see things differently and our perception changes. Be open minded to the possibility that every new thing you learn could open up new learning possibilities, be curious and open to new information and you may find that you develop some incredibly empowering new perceptions which allow you to learn even more.

STEP ONE – GET UP AND GET MOVING!

Sounds simple right – it can be easier said than done. True motivation comes from inside and if you haven’t got it right now, you can’t really pluck it out of the air, except that you can, at least for a moment. I have an inspirational leader to thank for getting me to the point where I took that first step. When things were not working, she noticed and helped picked me up.

At this time, there was definitely low energy in the team and I know that she was very active in helping others get through it as well. For me, I knew it was my time to move and this little push lit a fire under me that has continued to burn stronger ever since. For me, it was a simple motivational video - the words, the emotion and the feelings it evoked effectively changed my state long enough to get me up and inspired me to look for more. The spark you need might be different. There is a simple equation:

Dissatisfaction > resistance = Change

When your dissatisfaction with your situation is greater than your resistance to change, shit is going to start moving.

If you are struggling to find it inside, look outside, there are so many motivational leaders out there who just want to create a positive difference in peoples lives. Find one that you resonate with you and GET UP! As it became a daily thing for me to listen to motivational speakers at the gym or in the car, I started to notice some subtle shifts and started catching myself talking about things I could do rather than things I couldn’t do.

They say it takes 30 days to change a habit, but it only takes one action to get started. This simple act by an inspirational leader would have only taken a couple of minutes to do and could have easily been dismissed or not considered. But it was done, it did happen and it started a chain reaction that would change my life and hopefully the lives of many others as a result.

The secret of getting ahead is getting started – Mark Twain

My belief is that “You Cannot, not affect the lives of others”. Everyday when you show up in the world you have a choice to have a positive impact on those around you. You don’t always know when or where you are going to make a difference, but if you are always meeting the world with positive energy and trying to inspire, delight and spread love, you will make a difference!
