12 Steps to a Better You
Hi There, this is my first Blog and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Brad Levey - I am not a Doctor or a Psychologist, I don’t have a masters degree or a list of letters after my name. I am just an average guy, with average problems trying to live my life the best way I know how and Trying to provide the best life I can for my family and be the best me I can be. Or at least that is who I was.
For years I suffered through the ups and downs of depression, feeling unworthy of many of the joys that life had to offer. I struggled and I searched for answers to why. I searched in popular Psychology and threw myself into things like work and exercise, sometimes excessively obsessing over specific things in my life that I liked so that I could forget about the things in my life that I didn’t like…..then one day I literally hit rock bottom and decided that I wasn’t going to put up with it anymore., that I wasn’t going to put up with the old me anymore. I was absolutely positive that I was going to change my life and begin to life the life that I was meant to live.
Over the next 12 weeks I would like to share in brief the journey that I have been on and some insights that have really helped me to transform my life and set me on the path to living a life of purpose and a life filled with love and passion. There were a number of things that lead me to my low point and perhaps some of those will come to light over the next 12 weeks. What I really want to share is not so much about my story, but the tools that I have used to find myself and how they may be able to help you transform your life completely. Some of these will provide value for you and some may not, so please take what you need and leave what you don’t.
STEP ONE – GET UP!
Sounds simple right – it can be easier said than done. True motivation comes from inside and if you haven’t got it right now, you can’t really pluck it out of the air, except that you can, at least for a moment. I have an inspirational leader to thank for getting me to the point where I took that first step. When things were not working, she noticed and helped picked me up.
At this time, there was definitely low energy in the team and I know that she was very active in helping others get through it as well. For me, I knew it was my time to move and this little push lit a fire under me that has continued to burn stronger ever since. For me, it was a simple motivational video - the words, the emotion and the feelings it evoked effectively changed my state long enough to get me up and inspired me to look for more. The spark you need might be different. There is a simple equation:
Dissatisfaction > resistance = Change
When your dissatisfaction with your situation is greater than your resistance to change, shit is gonna start moving.
If you are struggling to find it inside, look outside, there are so many motivational leaders out there who just want to create a positive difference in peoples lives. Find one that you resonate with you and GET UP! As it became a daily thing for me to listen to motivational speakers at the gym or in the car, I started to notice some subtle shifts and started catching myself talking about things I could do rather than things I couldn’t do.
They say it takes 30 days to change a habit, but it only takes one action to get started. This simple act by an inspirational leader would have only taken a couple of minutes to do and could have easily been dismissed or not considered. But it was done, it did happen and it started a chain reaction that would change my life and hopefully the lives of many others as a result.
The secret of getting ahead is getting started – Mark Twain
My belief is that “You Cannot, not affect the lives of others”. Everyday when you show up in the world you have a choice to have a positive impact on those around you. You don’t always know when or where you are going to make a difference, but if you are always meeting the world with positive energy and trying to inspire, delight and spread love, you will make a difference!
